Why Does Conduit Fill Cause Wire Derating?
Electrical current flowing through a copper or aluminum wire generates internal heat due to electrical resistance (I2R thermal loss).
When 1, 2, or 3 conductors are pulled in a conduit, heat dissipates naturally into the surrounding environment. However, when 4 or more current-carrying conductors are packed inside a sealed conduit raceway, trapped heat builds up rapidly. High temperatures degrade wire insulation, melt jackets, and create severe fire hazards.
To prevent thermal breakdown, NEC Section 310.15(C)(1) requires electricians to lower (derate) the maximum current allowed through each conductor.
Official NEC Table 310.15(C)(1) Adjustment Factors
Whenever the number of current-carrying conductors in a raceway or cable exceeds 3, multiply the conductor’s 90°C ampacity by the following percentage:

Step-by-Step Derating Math Example
Suppose an electrician pulls 6 #12 AWG THHN copper wires (3 multi-wire branch circuits) inside a 1/2″ EMT conduit.
Step 1: Find the 90°C Listed Ampacity (NEC Table 310.15(B)(16))
- #12 AWG THHN Copper (90°C Column): 30 Amps
Step 2: Apply the Adjustment Factor (Table 310.15(C)(1))
- 6 Conductors: Multiply by 80% (0.80)
- Derated Ampacity: 30A×0.80=24 Amps
Step 3: Check Equipment Terminal Limitations (75°C Rule – NEC 110.14(C))
- Standard circuit breakers and switches are rated for 75°C terminals.
- #12 AWG Copper in the 75°C column is rated for 25 Amps.
- Since our derated calculation (24A) is less than the terminal limit (25A), the maximum continuous load permitted on this circuit is 24 Amps, protected by a 20 Amp standard breaker.
Which Conductors Count as “Current-Carrying”?
Understanding which wires trigger derating is critical to avoid over-derating or non-compliance:
1. Phase (Hot) Conductors: ALWAYS COUNT
- Every active phase wire carries load current and is counted.
2. Equipment Grounding Conductors (Bare or Green): DO NOT COUNT
- Under NEC 310.15(E), ground wires carry current only during ground-fault conditions and generate no continuous heat. They are exempt from derating.
3. Neutral Wires (White / Gray): IT DEPENDS
- Single-Phase 3-Wire Circuits (120/240V): Neutral carries only unbalanced current. DO NOT COUNT neutral.
- 3-Phase 4-Wire Wye Circuits: If feeding balanced linear loads, neutral carries unbalanced current. DO NOT COUNT neutral.
- Non-Linear / Harmonic Loads: If feeding computers, LED dimmers, or variable frequency drives (VFDs), harmonic currents flow continuously through the neutral. MUST COUNT neutral.
The 24-Inch Nipple Exemption (NEC 310.15(C)(1)(b))
If a conduit run between enclosures or switchboards does not exceed 24 inches in total length:
TIP
No Derating Required! Conduit nipples 24 inches or shorter are completely exempt from ampacity derating adjustment factors, regardless of how many conductors are pulled inside (up to 60% physical fill limit).
